Yog a
Program
Hatha
Yoga classes consist of a sequence of poses called Asanas, and breath
work called Pranayama. Featuring stretches, twists and balances, the
poses are approached mindfully and gently, honoring
the principle of “DO NO HARM.” Through regular practice
of yoga, your body grows stronger, more flexible and toned. Yoga helps
to maintain a balanced metabolism and promotes cardio and circulatory
health. Yoga practice also alleviates anxiety and develops a sense of
well being.
Our Yoga instructors are
trained to offer modifications to accommodate all levels of experience. The
descriptions provided below are intended to guide your discussion with
the instructor so that appropriate modifications can be made to enhance
your experience.
Beginner
- Under one year of regular
yoga practice OR for people who are most comfortable with basic poses.
Level
1 Yoga - One
year or more of regular yoga practice; familiar with pranayama, vinyasa
and more advanced poses including back bends and inversions.
Level
2 Yoga - Two
or more years of regular asana, vinyasa and pranayama; frequent backbends
and inversions including handstands advanced balance poses and yoga
wall work.
Therapeutic
Yoga - Therapeutic
Yoga was introduced by our Yoga Director, Melanie Whittaker, RYT,
following her year-long illness with breast cancer. On the heels of
her breast cancer, Melanie developed rheumatoid arthritis. Melanie’s
own experience with physical health challenges encouraged her to expand
her knowledge of therapeutic techniques and share the healing power
of yoga with others challenged by physical limitations.
Therapeutic Yoga adapts the
principles of traditional yoga to create a gently moving, slower paced
class. Therapeutic Yoga makes full use of supportive props such as chairs,
blocks, foam wedges, mats and blankets to assist participants with their
poses.
If you are recovering from
injury, illness or surgery, suffer from certain joint restrictions,
osteo or rheumatoid arthritis, MS or scoliosis, OR just need more assistance
and a slower pace than is offered in our regular classes, consider Therapeutic
Yoga. Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider if you have any concerns
about taking the Therapeutic Yoga class.
