Resting Metabolic Rate: Finding Your Balance Point

Finding the sweet spot between how many calories you eat and what your body burns is referred to as your resting metabolic rate - the amount of energy or calories your body uses just to keep you alive everyday. RMR is highly variable from person to person and may explain why one person can eat more than another and not gain weight.

Measuring RMR involves a simple test using a device called a metabolic cart. Energy produced by the body at rest is measured indirectly from the amounts of oxygen you inhale and the carbon dioxide you exhale. As you will be asked to fast for 12 hours, the test is usually performed in the morning, takes approximately 30 minutes and involves simply lying down in a quiet room and breathing normally into a mask.

RMR testing is now available through the Health Science Lab at Winthrop Physical Therapy. Appointments can be made at the front desk or by calling Winthrop Physical Therapy at 509.996.8234.
